CHRISTOPHER JOHN SMITH

Christopher John Smith was born in the industrial north of England, the son of an engineer and a mathematics teacher. From an early age he felt confined by the flatness of two-dimensional art and turned instead to design and mathematics as a refuge. He began his artistic journey at the Leeds College of Art & Design, before completing a BA in Contemporary Fine Arts at Staffordshire University (1996–1999). Soon after, he received a stipendium in Germany, where since 2009 he has worked from a city-sponsored studio in Magdeburg. In 2016 he became a member of the International Artists Forum (IKG).

Smith’s large-scale objects emphasise physical presence while revealing the beauty hidden in the ordinary. His work is at once a commentary on contemporary art and a quiet tribute to the simple things that shape our daily lives.

Chris is unique for Etheru not only because of his work, but also because he found us — not the other way around. A British artist living in Germany, he combines sensitivity with precision and an almost obsessive attention to detail. His practice moves between sculpture, design, and architecture, exploring the tension between mass and fragility, mathematical precision and organic form. Who wouldn’t fall in love with geometrically precise, gigantic, yet elegant hedgehogs? Through this, cold geometry is transformed into living, almost intimate objects.

His sculptural practice focuses on found materials and everyday objects—things made to be touched, handled, and worn by time.
“I often attribute sentimentality to objects based on their proximity and time spent with the owner or user—a shared history, one built on touch. These are the objects that interest me.”
